Specifically, that’s version 72.0.3626.97 of Chrome OS, which according to one report, brings Google Assistant and Android 9 Pie to select devices. Oddly, this news isn’t being promoted by Google itself, as the release notes don’t pack that tidbit. How to chain VPN servers

first_imgHow to chain VPN servers by Martin Brinkmann on May 19, 2016 in Security – 23 commentsVPN Chaining is a technique in which multiple virtual private network (VPN) servers are chained to improve online privacy while on the Internet.Basically, what it means is that you are not connecting to a single VPN but to multiple ones in a layered system that looks like Your PC > 1st VPN > 2nd VPN > Internet. Before we take a look at the how, we should discuss why you would want to do that. One argument is that you cannot trust any of the VPN providers out there. While most claim these days that they don’t log, there is virtually no way to prove that this is indeed the case. And even if they don’t log user activity, they may still be forced to cooperate and log activity of certain users connecting to the system, for instance when forced to do so by a court of law or when coerced.VPN Chaining improves privacy by connecting to multiple VPN servers operated by different companies who — preferably — operate in different jurisdictions. The advantage is that it becomes increasingly difficult to track users when they chain VPN servers. There are disadvantages however, for instance that the setup is complicated, that maintaining multiple VPN accounts is more expensive than just one, and that there is still a possibility of being tracked.AdvantagesDisadvantagesImproved privacycomplicated setupmore expensive (unless free services are used)slower speeds, higher latencyPossibility of being tracked is still thereHow to chain VPN serversUnless you operate all VPN servers that you want to chain, you cannot simply connect to the first VPN in the chain and be done with it.Connecting to multiple VPNs simultaneously on the same device does not work as well which that leaves virtual machines as the best solution to get the ball rolling.Basically, you connect to one VPN on the device you are using, and to others that you want as part of the chain in virtual machines.A simple chain would look like this: PC > 1st VPN > Virtual Machine > 2nd VPN > InternetYou would have to perform all activity using the Virtual Machine to take advantage of the chaining. How it works:Download VirtualBox from the official website and install the virtualization software.Download and install an operating system, Linux Mint for instance, in VirtualBox.Get accounts at two or more VPN services. You get big discounts at Ghacks Deals currently for select VPN providers.Connect to the first VPN on the device you are using.Connect to the second VPN in the Virtual Machine. If you have followed the suggestion above, connect to the VPN using Linux Mint. You can verify that the VPNs are chained by checking IP addresses. You will notice that the host device returns a different public IP than the virtual device.Crazy chaining: you can add as many VPN services to the chain as you like, but you need to install a virtual machine inside the virtual machine for each of them.Installation of VirtualBox and the host operating system should not pose problems to most users. The installation of the VPN service on the other hand may, but most VPN providers offer instructions on their web pages that detail the installation process on various operating systems including Linux.Closing WordsVPN Chaining improves online privacy and while it does not offer 100% protection, it offers far better protection than a single VPN (which in turn offers better protection than connecting directly to the Internet). Now You: Do you use a VPN?SummaryArticle NameHow to chain VPN serversDescriptionFind out how to chain VPN servers using two or more VPN providers and virtual machines on devices you operate to improve online privacy.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

Test hard drives for bad sectors with Hard Disk Validator

first_imgTest hard drives for bad sectors with Hard Disk Validator by Martin Brinkmann on July 30, 2018 in Software – 24 commentsHard Disk Validator is a free portable program for Microsoft Windows devices to test any connected hard drive for bad sectors and related issues.Failing hard drives are quite the problem. While it is possible to mitigate data loss with the creation of regular backups, it is also necessary to find a suitable replacement for the drive, connect it to the PC and migrate data to it.Hard drives are made up of sectors that data gets written to and checksums that should match the data of a sector. The checksum data does not match the data of the sector in bad sectors; this can be caused by power outages, unexpected restarts, failing hard drives, and other issues, for instance the one that throws “The memory could not be written” error messages.Hard Disk Validator may be used to run a series of checks on hard drives to find out of they have bad sectors or are becoming less reliable in other areas. You can run Hard Disk Validator directly after you have downloaded the archive to the local system and extracted it. Note that it requires an older version of the .Net Framework, and that it may be installed during setup on newer versions of the Windows operating system. We have reviewed comparable programs in the best. Check out HDDScan, Disk Scanner, or HDD Guardian to name just a few.Hard Disk ValidatorThe program interface is straightforward. Select one of the connected drives at the top, and then one of the available test scenarios on the right. Note that the developer suggests to run only read tests on the operating system drive. He suggests to either connect the drive to a secondary PC to run the test, or boot into a recovery environment to run it from there. As always, it is recommended to create a backup of the entire hard drive before you use Hard Disk Validator. You may run the following four operations:Read — tests read capabilities. Will test all sectors of the hard drive to find bad sectors.Read – Wipe Damaged – Read — Same as above. Only difference is that the program attempts to overwrite bad sectors to read again from them to verify if they are okay.Read – Write – Verify – Restore — Writes test patterns to disk to verify them to make sure sectors are okay. Restores the original data afterward.Write – Verify — Same as above but without the restoration of the original data.Tests take different execution times with read being the fastest. The program displays all sectors of the hard drive and uses color codes to indicate the status of the sector. Green means everything is okay and red that the sector is damaged.Closing WordsHard Disk Validator is a program that you run when you suspect that a hard drive may be failing, or for verification on a regular schedule. There is no option to schedule scans so that you have to run the program manually whenever you want to verify hard drives. The program reveals bad sectors of hard drives to you and may be used to fix them if the issue has not been caused by hardware failures. Now You: Do you check your drives regularly?Summary12345 Author Rating3.5 based on 3 votes Software Name Hard Disk ValidatorOperating System WindowsSoftware Category AdministrationLanding Page Advertisementlast_img read more

Mozilla Firefox Preview new Firefox browser is available on Google Play

first_imgMozilla Firefox Preview, new Firefox browser, is available on Google Play by Martin Brinkmann on May 16, 2019 in Firefox, Google Android – 38 commentsFenix, which is a codename, is a new browser for Android by Mozilla that will replace the current Firefox web browser for Android eventually. Fenix is open source and interested users may follow development on the project’s GitHub website.Firefox users interested in the new browser could not get it from Google Play up until now; this changed recently with the release of a preview version of the browser called Firefox Preview. Designed for beta testing and feedback, it is available to all Google Play users who sign up to participate in the testing.Firefox Preview is based on Mozilla’s Android Components and GeckoView. The preview version is considered beta; it lacks some features that Mozilla wants to implement before the final release. Users should expect bugs in the preview of Firefox for Android, and Mozilla expects them to report these bugs so that they may be fixed before the final release. The release version of the new browser won’t support all features of the current Firefox browser for Android. Extensions support is planned but won’t be supported in early stable versions of the browser.Mozilla aims for an end of June release. Firefox users who want to test the mobile browser right now can do so right now by following these steps:Visit the following Mozilla website: the Beta Testing Program on the site.Join the Firefox Fenix Nightly group on Google Groups:!forum/fenix-nightlyOpt-in on Google Play to receive test builds of the mobile browser: the Firefox Preview browser from Google Play: steps, with the exception of the last, won’t be necessary anymore once Mozilla publishes a final version of the browser. Here are a couple of screenshots of the new browser:Firefox Preview will receive automatic updates after installation. Whether that is purely automated depends on the Play Store settings. The default setting updates applications automatically when the Android device is connected to a wireless network. You can switch that to any network or don’t update automatically in the Google Play Store settings. Now You: What is your first impression of Firefox Preview? first_imgWindows 10 version 1903: removed and deprecated features by Martin Brinkmann on May 23, 2019 in Windows – 9 commentsWindows 10 version 1903, the May 2019 Update, has been out for a couple of days. Microsoft published a list of Windows 10 version 1903 features that it removed, will remove soon, or is no longer developing. The company did the same for previous Windows 10 feature update releases. You can check out the list of removed and deprecated features of Windows 10 version 1809 and Windows 10 version 1803 by following the links. The list is short, especially if you compare it to removed and deprecated features in previous versions. There is also no controversial feature removal or deprecation like the HomeGroup feature removal in the April 2018 Update.Removed featuresIt is unclear how popular the removed or changed features are. If I had to guess, I’d say not very considering that Windows Mobile is not really a thing anymore. XDDM appears to be supported in this release as it has not been removed according to Microsoft’s description.FeatureDetailsXDDM-based remote display driverRemote Desktop Services use a Windows Display Driver Model based Indirect Display Driver for single session remote desktops starting with Windows 10 version 1903. Steam and Ubuntu support until 2025 and 2004 LTS

first_imgSteam and Ubuntu: support until 2025 and 20.04 LTS by Martin Brinkmann on July 01, 2019 in Games, Linux – 38 commentsSteam customers who run the gaming client on Ubuntu machines were in for a shock when Canonical, Ubuntu’s parent company, announced that it would not support 32-bit packages on Ubuntu going forward. Valve Software, parent company of Steam, revealed that Steam would not support Ubuntu anymore once the change landed and that Valve would not recommended Ubuntu either anymore.Ubuntu has been the only Linux distribution that Steam supported officially up until now. While Steam works fine on many other Linux distributions, Valve would not offer any kind of support if Steam was not run on Ubuntu. The dropping of 32-bit packages from Ubuntu would pose serious troubles for Steam going forward. Valve notes that the Steam client requires 32-bit libraries and while Valve might be able to fix that in time, Linux users would find out soon thereafter that thousands of games would not play anymore because they required 32-bit environments.Steam relies on certain components that need to be available on the systems the software is run on, and some of these happen to be 32-bit.There’s a lot more to the technical and non-technical reasons behind our concerns, but the bottom line is that we would have had to drop what we’re doing and scramble to support the new scheme in time for 19.10. We weren’t confident we could do that without passing some of the churn to our users, and it would not solve the problems for third-party software outside of Steam upon which many of our users rely.Canonical, as a response, published a statement in which it announced that the next Ubuntu releases, 19.10 and 20.04 LTS, would include “selected 32-bit i386 packages”. The company plans to involve the community to find out which 32-bit packages are needed to run legacy software and games. For mid-term, Canonical wants to “work with the WINE, Ubuntu Studio and gaming communities to use container technology to address the ultimate end of life of 32-bit libraries”.The company notes that it had several motivations for the decision to drop 32-bit packages including that these receive limited testing and that many Spectre and Meltdown mitigations are not available for 32-bit systems.Valve Software, while admitting that it is not “thrilled” about the removal of existing functionality, said that it welcomes the plan and that it seems likely that the company can “continue to officially support Steam on Ubuntu” as a consequence. The company plans to look at distribution support going forward and considers working “closer with many more distribution maintainers in the future”.Support for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ends in 2025 at the earliest. Valve improved game support on Linux recently by introducing a new feature called Steam Play which brings more Windows games to Linux. Now You: Have you tried Steam on Linux? What is your take?SummaryArticle NameSteam and Ubuntu: support until 2025 and 20.04 LTSDescriptionUbuntu will continue to ship with 32-bit packages required to run legacy applications and games, including those on the Steam gaming platform.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more
